CHAPTER SIXTEEN

She slept with a smile on her face. That warmed Matty’s heart. And what a face it was. He was laying on his side staring at that remarkable face. She looked like an angel to him, but with an edge there too. But it wasn’t an obvious edge. The average man would not be able to see it. But Matty saw it. He saw that it was an edginess hewn by years of some kind of blistering pain. He couldn’t put his finger on what that pain could be, but he felt it as if it was his pain too.

And he also felt her joy. She needed this. She maybe even needed him. That idea, that somebody could actually need him, not for his money or his dick, but for himself, brought a smile to Matty’s face. There were a lot of layers to Renesha Barrett. Lots of layers. But unlike most men, he thought, as he gently traced the outline of her face with his finger, he very much wanted to peel those layers. He very much wanted to get to know her in every possible way.

But did she want to get to know him that way? And given the kind of man he was, a man who wasn’t known for warmth or gentleness; who had more enemies than he ever had friends, would that even be advisable?

His touch, though he had barely touched her, caused her to begin stirring awake. And then her big, beautiful, golden-brown eyes opened. He could tell, at first, that she didn’t realize where she was and a slight panic took hold. And then she looked beside her, and saw him staring at her, and to his forever gratitude she smiled the most wonderful smile in the world. This was the only woman who ever captivated him from the moment he laid eyes on her a decade ago. And it was still there. She was still captivating him. Was she the one he needed?

“Hey,” he said to her, unable to suppress his own smile.

“Hey,” Rennie said. “So it wasn’t a dream after all.”

Matty loved that she wasn’t ashamed to go there. “No, dear, it wasn’t a dream.”

Rennie traced the lines of age on the side of his eyes as he smiled at her. “How old are you, Matthew?” she asked him.

Matty stared at her. He was much older than she was, and that might be a turnoff for her. “Thirty-nine,” he said.

“Your ass forty, quit lying,” she said.

Matty laughed. “How did you know my age?”

“Ever hear of Google?”

He laughed again. “If you knew my age already, why did you ask me?”

“To see what you would say. As if one year would make any different. Thirty-nine, forty, what’s the difference? Old is old.”

Matty playfully pushed her. “Who you calling old?”

She laughed too. “I’m just messing with you, boy,” she said. Then she yawned, covering her mouth, and stretched. “How long was I asleep?”

“Not long.”

“Did you fall asleep too?”

“Me? I never sleep.”

Rennie smiled. She doubted that.
